Teacher, Mentor, Friend
Letter from APS President, Jane Aldrich
We were all saddened to learn of the death of Professor R. Bruce Merrifield last week. Bruce's development of solid phase synthesis revolutionized how we synthesize peptides, making possible the application of peptides in fields as diverse as biomedical research and material science. Most of us would not be able to do the research we do today without this seminal technique, which the Nobel Prize committee described as "simple and ingenious". Solid phase synthesis has had a significant impact in a number of areas beyond peptide chemistry, including the synthesis of oligonucleotides, solid phase organic synthesis and combinatorial chemistry. There are few developments in scientific research that have had the wide ranging influence of Dr. Merrifield's technique. Bruce Merrifield was not only a great scientist, but also a wonderful colleague and mentor. He left a legacy in the scientists he trained who have gone on to become leaders in the peptide and protein science fields. As his former students and associates noted, he was known for his modesty, integrity, and courage; and all who met him were changed. He will be missed by all of us. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends on the loss of this great man.
